Confession of Sins and Forgiveness
P: In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32). When the truth of God’s Word offends or points out sin in our lives, we often take offense and do not want to hear it. We get defensive, blame others, or accuse people of being judgmental. Yet it is only when we recognize our sin, repent, and hear what God has done for us in Jesus that we can be forgiven. So let us go before the Lord, confessing all the times that we have been neglected to hear the truth, and for all the other sins of our life, as we seek God’s forgiveness.
C: Gracious Lord, You give us Your Word that gives life and guides us on how to live. Yet when it points out the ways that we have failed, we are often reluctant to hear it. We ignore Your Word or trade Your truth for our own. Forgive us for all the times that we do not listen to the truth of Your Word and exchange it for our own, and for all the other sins of our lives. By Your Spirit, open our hearts to Your Word, so that we might hear the truth, recognize our sin, repent, and receive life through Your Son. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pause for Personal Confession of Sins

P: Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) God sent Him into the World so that we might know the truth of God’s love. God sent His one and only Son into the world so that He would take up our sins, die on the cross as our payment, and rose from the dead to proclaim victory over sin, death, and the devil, and God’s great love for us. Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection for you, all of your sins are forgiven. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
